The effects of Human Trafficking
Youth of South Carolina
The Keynote speaker for this event will be Retired Los Angeles Police Lt. Andre Dawson. Mr. Dawson is the Director of the Los Angeles Project Unity USA and comes with extensive experience and knowledge of the field of Human Trafficking. He headed up a major task force in Los Angeles that consisted of Homeland Security, Los Angeles Police Department, Marshals Service and Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. Mr. Dawson brings more than 10 years experience in this field and 35 years as a Los Angeles Police Officer. Mr. Dawson is an expert witness for Homeland Security, Los Angeles Police Department and other State and Federal Law Enforcement agencies. Mr. Dawson teaches classes to Federal prosecutors and Law Enforcement agencies, concentrating on the identification, arrest and prosecution of Human Trafficking suspects.
There will be a screening of the movie "FLESH-Bought and sold in the US". This documentary will give the general public a clearer understanding as to how our youth are being lured away from their homes and becoming victims of Human Trafficking.
Mr. Bruce Trezevant (a former Los Angeles Police Officer) states that upon relocation to Columbia in 1989, he sounded the alarm of the misfortunes coming to Columbia in the area of gangs and voiced concerns that Columbia should be proactive about dealing with this serious issue. His warnings went mostly ignored and the rest of the story is history. We, as Citizens and Law Enforcement, have found that it is hard to put Pandora back inside its box. Once again, the alarm is being sounded about the crime of Human Trafficking and how it is targeting our youth and used for monetary gain by criminals.
Project Unity USA is hosting this event to bring awareness of Human Trafficking in Columbia and unite the Law Enforcement with the community to be proactive in making sure that Human Trafficking does not claim more victims and continue to corrode our community.
After the screening and a few words from Mr. Dawson, there will be an open question and answer session. Youth and parents are strongly encouraged to attend and get engaged in this event. This event will give anyone attending a strong knowledge of what Human Trafficking is and how to defend against it. This is a free event hosted by Project Unity USA, refreshments will be served.
The event will be held at The South Carolina Archives Building, 3801 Parklane Road, Columbia, SC on Saturday April 23rd, from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm.
