Project Unity USA to Host "Hands Around the State House II" in Support of Hate Crimes Legislation
Columbia, SC – April 10, 2025 — Project Unity USA, in collaboration with Palmetto Hope Network, the National Action Network, Tri-County Gun Violence Coordinating Council, and other advocacy groups, will host "Hands Around the State House II" on Wednesday, April 23, 2025, at 11:00 AM on the North Grounds of the South Carolina State House, 1100 Gervais St., Columbia, SC.
The event aims to raise awareness and garner support for House Bill 3039, also known as the "Senator Clementa C. Pinckney Hate Crimes Act." South Carolina remains one of only three states in the nation without a hate crimes law—an absence this coalition is determined to address.
“We are gathering once again to show our unity, our strength, and our demand for justice,” said Bruce A. Trezevant, Founder and CEO of Project Unity USA. “This rally is a powerful opportunity for the people of South Carolina to join hands and take a stand against hate in all its forms.”
The date of the rally is especially significant as 2025 marks ten years since the tragic mass shooting at Mother Emanuel AME Church in Charleston, SC, where nine lives were taken in an act of hate-fueled violence. Despite the passage of time, the South Carolina legislature has yet to hold a hearing on hate crimes legislation.
Participants are encouraged to wear white and arrive early to form a unity circle around the State House grounds.
Let’s turn tragedy into action. Let’s stop hate—now.
